Josh Keyes was born in Washington. He received a BFA in 1992 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in 1998 from Yale.

Eighteenth-century aesthetics and philosophies shape the formal style and composition of Josh Keyes’ paintings. Keyes is drawn to the diagrammatic vocabulary of scientific textbook illustrations, which often express in a detached and clinical viewpoint, the empirical truth of the world and natural phenomena. Assembled into this virtual stage set are references to contemporary events along with images and themes from his personal mythology and life experience.

Together, these elements form a kind of eco-surrealism, an unsettling vision that express the psychology and psyche of our time. Josh Keyes lives and works in Portland Oregon.
